Women in Molecular Biology at USC is a group dedicated to addressing and providing support for issues that are unique to or heightened among women, non-binary and trans students in the Molecular and Computational Biology (MCB) M.S. and Ph.D. programs. We want to address issues that directly result from and intersect with the non-masculine and non-binary graduate student experience, which include but are not limited to pregnancy and childcare, sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and sexual harassment. WiM is an ally to the Black, Indigenous, people of color, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ communities. We continue to push for equity and diversity within academia. This group should serve as a space for women and non-binary students to express themselves, their ideas, and their concerns, and to receive support from peers. We strive for an environment in which women, non-binary and trans students feel able and are encouraged to call attention to any and all issues they face in the workplace and the classroom.

Our Projects

Safe Space & Resource Places

Our goal is to provide time during the day for our hardworking graduate students and postdocs, especially women, to de-stress with snacks and music, and take a minute to learn about on-campus resources they may need.

A Social Network for Scientists

We host game nights, yoga hours, holiday events, candy gram exchanges, and more to foster a sense of community between all of the women of our department: graduate students, postdocs, professors and staff are all welcome.

Professional Development for Students

WiM is committed to providing events that cover broad and diverse topics within scientific professional development, including interview preparation and CV writing workshops.

Coffee Hours with Women Biology PhDs

In addition to hosting women professors, we focus on inviting women in non-academic career paths to speak with our graduate students to expose our graduate community to a richer variety of careers.

Science in Society Discussion Sessions

The format of this series is a monthly journal club and discussion that focuses on the intersection of the sciences with current social issues. Through this series, WiM hopes to foster meaningful dialogues within our community of molecular biologists that centers us in the society we live in.

Free Menstrual Products at MCB Facilities

WiM views menstrual products as a form of health care—and because USC provides health care coverage to its graduate students, postdocs, professors and staff, we asked the Department of Molecular and Computational Biology to fund WiM to stock all women and gender neutral restrooms in the Department's buildings with free menstrual products.
